Coach Training Helps Supervisors LEVERAGE Their Skills

An article in a San Francisco paper recently described a training program for holistic health care practitioners. It was called the Leverage System, geared at coaching nutrition counselors, yoga teachers, and the like on how to “discover hidden opportunities” to improve and grow their business.

I liked the acronym so much, I decided to tweak it in order to adapt it to coach training for supervisors. Here’s how supervisors who need to improve their ability to coach and lead their team can LEVERAGE their skills.

L: Listen to your team and ask questions

Listening and asking powerful questions to help employees solve their own problems improves their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Next time around they'll be able to figure things out on their own.

E: Evaluate your team daily

Performance management is not an annual event. Make sure you provide feedback regularly. The only way employees learn is through coaching.

V: Value your team

And make sure they know it. Researchers recommend supervisors provide recognition to employees at least every seven days.

E: Engage your team

High performance is linked to high engagement. ‘Nuff said.

R: Reach out to your team

Communication is critical to team success, whether team members are centrally or remotely located. Someone once said, “How well we communicate is determined not by how well we say things but how well we are understood.”

A: Allow your team to succeed

Don’t get in the way of your team’s success. Give them the play and let them run with it.

G: Give your team support

Be open and available. Give team members opportunities to shine. Make teamwork a performance expectation.

E: Experience success

At the end of the day, the team’s success is your success. Remember: what gets celebrated gets repeated.
