Responsibilities
Conducting the Performance Appraisal Module
Overview
Supervisors want to be able to accurately reflect the
performance achieved during the period and present it
in a way that helps the employee build on identified
success, and/or improve their performance. This module
focuses on how to share observations and conclusions
regarding observed performance, identify strengths and
performance successes, discuss performance problems
and set new performance expectations for the upcoming
period.
Objectives
Participants in this training will learn to:
- Identify specific goals and expectations for individual
performance
- Use appropriate documentation to measure individual
performance
- Provide necessary resources to help individuals
perform to the best of their ability
- Practice interpersonal communications skills necessary
for individual and team success
- Provide effective and timely performance feedback
throughout the course of the appraisal period
- Provide effective feedback during a formal performance
appraisal session
- Prepare for the performance feedback session. In
particular:
-Review documentation
-Identify successes and failures during the
period
-Complete the appraisal form in accordance with
established procedures
-Recognize and account for potential “rater
errors”
- During the performance feedback session:
-Review the expected performance and its standards
and how they serve team and organizational goals
-Clarify any ambiguities regarding the performance
or its standards
-Share observations and conclusions regarding
the observed performance
-Identify individual strengths and performance
successes
-Define any performance problems
-Using documentation and observable data, determine
the causes of the problem
-Gain alignment concerning the approach to performance
issues
-Use procedures, principles, and values to resolve
conflicts regarding the performance appraisal
-Make a plan with the associate/employee to
resolve any performance issue
-Create the performance plan for the next appraisal
period
Scope: 12-24 participants per workshop
Duration: One half day
